The Boston Common is a popular public park in the city that is found right next to the public garden in the heart of Boston City. The Boston Common is also known as the oldest city park in the United States and dates back to the 17th century when it was used as a pasture. The park is which is nearly 50 acres in size is the starting point of the Freedom Trail and acts as the anchor of the â??Emerald Necklaceâ? which is a chain of interconnected parks and greens in Boston that encompasses nearly all of the cityâ??s neighborhoods.
From a historical perspective the Boston Common has been used for a variety of purposes; such as being a place for cattle to graze in the 1630â??s to being used a military camp by the British during the 18th century. The Common was later used as a place for public executions, where criminals were hung from the numerous oaks in the park a proper gallows was also constructed here in 1769. The park has also served as a place for gatherings and protests, the first of which was in 1713 when a group of angry Bostonians protested against food shortages later during the 1960â??s large groups of college students regularly gathered here to protest against the Vietnam War. Notable personalities such a Martin Luther King and Pope John Paul II have addressed formal gatherings here.
Today the park serves as a place of public recreation and as a venue for concerts, meetings and soft ball games. The large artificial lake is also a great place to relax by feeding the water fowl or by taking a ride on a swan boat. The historical attractions here include the Massachusetts State House that is seen on the northern edge of the Common it is the seat of government for the state.
Another interesting attraction here is the Soldiers and Sailors monument which was erected here in 1877 in tribute to the gallant armed forces of the United States. The Robert Gould Shaw monument is another civil war relic that commemorates the 54th regiment which was the first â??freeâ? black regiment of the Union Army. The Brewer fountain is an exact replica of the one designed for the World Exposition in Paris in 1855 it has intricately carved figures of Neptune, Galatea, Amphitrite and Acis.
