Carole King Concerts

When Carole King and James Taylor shared the stage of the Troubadour club in 1970 little did they know that this will be the performance to shoot them both to stardom. The next year King released her album Tapestry which is one of the best-selling albums ever, winning her four Grammy Awards that year and making her the first woman to win so many Grammys in a single year.

After forty years King and Taylor will get together again for their Troubadour Reunion tour. The tour will start with a show in Melbourne on March 27 and will continue with a series of shows in New Zealand and Japan. In May they will return for the US leg of the tour which will end in July.

The US leg of the Troubadour Reunion tour will include stops at Seattle’s Key Arena, San Jose’s HP Pavilion, LA’s Hollywood bowl, the Jobing.com Arena in Phoenix, the Sommet Center in Nashville, Chicago’s Allstate Arena, The Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, Air Canada Centre in Toronto, as well as other venues in Columbus, Atlanta, Tampa, Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and others.

King and Taylor will tour together with their old friends and band-mates guitarist Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Lee Sklar.

Both King and Taylor have been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, they are both Grammy Awards winners and are among the most successful musicians ever.

More than 1000 artists have recorded Carole King’s songs. From her 25 solo albums more than 100 hit singles have emerged. Her most successful album, Tapestry, is regarded as a classic not only for its original songs but also for popular covers such as Aretha Franklin’s version of “Natural Woman”. Most recently singer Christine Tobin and pianist Liam Noble expressed their desire to create an album based on Tapestry but looking at the songs from a jazz perspective. The project is called Tapestry Rewoven and is expected to be completely different from the original.
If you’re planning a trip to Boston but don’t want to spend a lot of money, you may be wondering what to do in Boston for free. If you love music, the answer is simple: you can attend a concert in Boston for free. How? All it takes is knowing where to find free concerts – and the good news is that Boston has a lot of them.

One reason for all the free musical performances is that Boston and nearby Cambridge have 4 colleges and conservatories specializing in music and musical performance. This means that on most days, you’ll have your choice of many top-notch concerts, recitals, and performances by emerging and established musicians – and most of them are free.

How do you find these free concerts? Simply by knowing where to look – usually on the Events Calendar that you’ll find on each school’s website. To further refine your search, it helps to know what kind of music you’d like to hear, and then see what’s offered at a school that specializes in it.

For example, if you like jazz, contemporary music, and popular music rooted in the African cultural diaspora, you’ll want to check out Berklee College of Music, which specializes in training musicians who embrace these particular musical traditions and styles. Go to Berklee’s website and find the “Related Links” section in the left-side navigation bar. Click on “Events Calendar.”

The free concerts that you’ll see might include a jazz drummer, a pianist playing tango music, a mandolin mash-up, a performer playing her original Latin-Japanese-Brazilian jazz composition, and much more. Concerts are held in various performance venues on the Berklee campus, located in Boston’s Back Bay and Fenway neighborhoods and easily reached by walking or subway.

Do you prefer opera, classical music, or Broadway musicals? Boston Conservatory specializes in training musical performers who go on to careers in orchestras, Broadway, theater, dance, and opera. To locate their numerous free performances in these areas plus dance and theater, go to their website and click on “Performances” on their top menu bar, and then “Events Calendar.” You’ll find plenty of stellar performances by the stars of tomorrow. Boston Conservatory is also located in the Fenway neighborhood.

During the summer, your musical options for what to do in Boston for free move outdoor. Copley Square, Post Office Square, and Boston’s Downtown Waterfront areas are just a few of the spots where you’ll find free outdoor concerts several times a week, usually around noontime.

Another place where you’ll find free concerts in Boston is Trinity Church in Copley Square in the Back Bay neighborhood. Their Friday noon organ concerts are legendary among music lovers. Their active music program also features virtuoso performers, choral performances, and other special events. Check their website and click “Music” to find schedules.

These suggestions are just a few of Boston’s large number of free concert options. As you can see, you could fill an entire trip to Boston with gorgeous music – all free! – and just one more reason to visit this culturally-rich Massachusetts city.
