Coldplay are an English alternative rock band formed in 1998 in London, England. The group comprises of four members- Chris Martin (lead vocals, keyboards, guitar), Jonny Buckland (lead guitar), Guy Berryman (bass guitar), and Will Champion (drums, backing vocals, other instruments).
After surfacing in 2000 with the breakthrough single Yellow, Coldplay fast became one of the leading bands of the new millennium. They achieved worldwide fame following their debut album Parachutes which was nominated for the mercury prize. Parachutes went multi platinum in several countries and also earned the band their first Grammy.

Riding high on the success of their second album, Coldplay started recording their sophomore album in 2001 and emerged with A Rush of Blood to the Head which was released in 2002. Soon after the album’s release in august. Coldplay embarked on a global concert tour. The album also won a Grammy award for best alternative music album. In December 2003, readers of the rolling stone magazine chose Coldplay as the best artist and the best band of the year. The following year, the single “clocks” won the record of the year at the 2004 Grammy’s.

In June 2005, Coldplay released their third album X&Y. it became the best selling album of 2005 with worldwide sales on 8.3 million. The album debuted at #1 in 30 countries worldwide and became the third-fastest selling album in UK chart history. In October 2006, Coldplay began work on their fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. “Violet Hill” was confirmed as the first single of the album, released on 29 April, 2008 and soon entered the UK and US top 10 charts. The title track, “Viva la Vida”, was also released exclusively on iTunes. It became the band’s first number one on the Billboard Hot 100. At the 51st Grammy awards, the album earned 3 wins.
